TMD Aches and Migraine Headaches

Anyone who's suffered from them knows that migraines are absolutely horrible. The throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light can be debilitating. Migraines interfere with work, family, and life in general. Three times as many women report recurring migraines as men. Migraine sufferers know as soon as they see the aura in their vision, they’re in for a rough day. What many don't know is that their migraines may be caused by TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). TMD is a condition caused by malocclusion (over/underbite), which misaligns the TMJs (temporomandibular joints) between the jaw and the skull. TMD is serious, and causes migraine-type headaches. When the TMJ is strained, it affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries pain signals to the brain from the head and neck. Other TMD symptoms include:

  • Pain in the back, neck, or face
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms or hands
  • Jaw pain, stiffness, soreness
  • Dizziness or vertigo

It's impossible for a patient to know for sure if their migraines are the result of TMD. Physicians without neuromuscular dentistry training may miss it. Rochester Advanced Dentistry can tell you whether TMD is causing your headaches. If you receive a diagnosis of TMD, we will work with you to choose a treatment strategy that can relieve your pain and return you to a life without migraines. Dr. Kurt Doolin and Dr. Jeffrey Haddad diagnose and treat TMD patients in Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township and surrounding areas of Michigan. If you think your migraines, headaches, or other symptoms may be caused by TMD, please contact Rochester Advanced Dentistry to schedule a free neuromuscular evaluation.

Who Should Consider Dental Implants?

People who are missing teeth and want to improve their smiles are ideal candidates for dental implants. Implants can be used to replace one tooth at a time, or to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Esthetically pleasing, dental implants can help restore your confidence and lead to improved self esteem and social comfort. Dental implants are permanent, making them perfect for people who are inconvenienced by the maintenance, application, and function of their dentures. Jaw bones shrink over time following tooth loss, but dental implants maintain your facial structure so you never have to worry about ill-fitting or uncomfortable dentures again. Adhesives are expensive and their application can be bothersome, and unreliable. Dental implants provide a permanent solution for missing teeth; eliminating the need for adhesives. Dental implants can even provide a base to which partial dentures can easily be snapped into place. Dental implants are for anyone who is interested in having a permanent, beautiful smile. Rochester Advanced Dentistry has helped countless patients in Rochester, Rochester Hills, and Troy, Michigan, as well as the townships of Oakland, Macomb and Shelby, complete their smiles with dental implants.
